The Ontario government has selected EllisDon as construction manager for the replacement of the Little Current Swing Bridge, a 110-year-old structure on Highway 6 connecting Manitoulin Island to the Ontario mainland. 

The bridge, situated in the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands, is the sole road link to Manitoulin Island, providing essential access for residents, businesses and travellers. 

According to the government, the current swing bridge, which has been in service for over a century, is set to be replaced by a new two-lane swing bridge.  

Planning, preliminary design and the environmental assessment for the replacement were completed in 2023, and a contract for detailed design was awarded in October. 

The project aims to preserve the swing function of the current bridge and provide consistent, year-round access to the provincial highway network, supporting travel for work, housing and essential services. 

Ontario Northern Economic Development and Growth Minister George Pirie said: “The Little Current Swing Bridge is a vital connection for Manitoulin Island residents, businesses and visitors. As the Island’s only year-round road crossing, it supports access to jobs, education, healthcare and economic opportunities across the region.  

“Our government is proud to be taking another important step toward replacing this critical piece of infrastructure while preserving its iconic swing bridge design. This investment will help keep people and goods moving safely and reliably for decades to come, while protecting the unique character of this important gateway to Manitoulin Island.” 

The announcement of construction manager forms part of a broader provincial programme to improve transportation infrastructure, with Ontario investing C$31bn in highway, road and bridge projects.  

This includes upgrade projects across Northern Ontario, such as work on Highway 17, the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 69.
