Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to construct 19 truck rest stops and lay-bys across various locations within the city.

The construction will be carried out by the RTA in partnership with private entities.

It involves the construction of three Integrated Trucks Lay-bys, one of which will be built in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

The remaining two will be constructed together with Almutakamela Vehicle Testing and Registration.

The Integrated Trucks Lay-bys will include various services, comprising refuelling stations, driving training centres, administrative buildings, clinics, as well as pharmacies to ensure the safety and well-being of drivers.

The lay-bys will span over a total area of more than 226,000m², each lay-by with a capacity to accommodate 120 to 200 trucks or heavy vehicles.

Furthermore, the RTA, alongside the ADNOC, will develop the 16 Truck Rest Stops across Dubai in six major locations, strategic roads, and logistic cities that see the movement of large numbers of trucks every day.

These stops will include prayer rooms, restaurants, motels, maintenance workshops, and more.

Each of these stops will cover an area from 5,000m² to 10,000m² to house 30 to 40 trucks.

These rest stop locations are at Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Dubai-Hatta Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, Jebel Ali - Lehbab Road, and Al Aweer Road.

The project in its entirety will cover an area of more than 300,000m², with the capability to house over 1,000 trucks and heavy vehicles.

RTA Board of Executive Directors' chair and director general for the company Mattar Al Tayer said: “The agreement reached with ADNOC and Almutakamela to build and operate these Trucks Rest Stops and Lay-bys aims to raise the profile of Dubai as a global hub for logistical transport besides enhancing the safety and well-being of drivers by providing amenities and services needed in their daily lives.”
