The Government of Western Australia has awarded two construction tenders for Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital to Perth-based Devlyn Construction.

Authorities stated that these projects aim to expand diagnostic and treatment capacity at the hospital.

The first project will upgrade the Neurological Intervention and Imaging Service of Western Australia (NIISwa) facilities, which currently provides specialist procedures for brain aneurysms, vascular malformations, carotid disease and offers interventional stroke therapy.

The second project will involve the installation of an additional CT scanner and refurbishment works in the hospital’s Radiology Department.

This responds to increased demand for CT imaging services at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, which conducts more CT examinations than other tertiary hospitals in Perth.

Officials expect the third scanner to improve access to diagnostic imaging for patients across Western Australia.

Construction work on both projects is scheduled to begin later this year.

Western Australia Health Minister Meredith Hammat said: “Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital performs more CT scans than any other hospital in WA, and a third scanner will ensure faster access to high-quality care.”

The contracts form part of more extensive capital developments at the hospital, with over A$113m ($79.4m) already allocated for emergency department redevelopment and intensive care unit expansion.

These initiatives are included within a broader A$4.9bn ($3.4bn) health infrastructure investment by the Cook Government.

Western Australia Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said: "Our government is rolling out a record A$4.9bn health infrastructure program, which includes significant investment at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

“In addition to the upgrade to the NIISwa and installation of a third CT scanner, construction is underway on a redevelopment of the emergency department and expansion of the ICU.

“These important projects help to boost capacity across our hospital system, ensuring Western Australians can access the care they need, when they need it.”

Devlyn Construction has previously completed fit outs in health facilities across Western Australia.

Recently, the Cook Government commenced construction on the Osborne Park Hospital expansion, which forms part of the A$1.8bn ($1.27bn) New Women and Babies Hospital Project.
