The Australian and New South Wales (NSW) governments have indicated that the construction of the Mamre Road Stage 2 upgrade is anticipated to start in 2026.
Mamre Road serves as a main transport connection to employment zones in Western Sydney, including the site of the upcoming Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.
The road is scheduled to be expanded to two lanes in each direction via a A$1bn ($654.72m) upgrade funded by the governments.
The planned upgrade is intended to improve travel efficiency, manage higher traffic volumes, and increase road safety as the area experiences further growth.
Works on the second stage of the road improvement project will get underway following the receipt of planning approvals.
The government authorities have released initial designs and an environmental review for the next phase of the Mamre Road upgrade between Erskine Park Road and Kerrs Road.
The documents detail plans to change Mamre Road from a local street to a main road for Western Sydney.
A video has been released, illustrating plans for developing the 6.1km stretch from St Clair to Kemps Creek. This video outlines infrastructure changes aimed at accommodating an increase in local population and road use.
Current traffic volume sits at approximately 20,000 vehicles per day through this corridor, with projections indicating this figure could double by 2041.
Officials are also inviting public feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors. The assessment looks at possible effects to factors such as noise, air quality, flooding, plant and animal life, and heritage sites.
Community input on these findings will influence the final project plans and seek to address any identified impacts.
Western Sydney Acting Minister Courtney Houssos said: “We want to get this right, and that means hearing from the people who use Mamre Road every day. Community feedback on the environmental assessment is critical and will help shape the final design to best meet local needs.”
The latest initiative extends work that began under the A$290m Stage 1 upgrade of Mamre Road, which covers a 3.8km section already under construction.
Once complete, this development aims to enhance links between the M4 Motorway and Elizabeth Drive.
Among the planned features for Stage 2 are new traffic signals with pedestrian crossings at Darrabarra Avenue and Abbotts Road, as well as upgraded bus stops and shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
Construction completion is targeted for 2029.
