W&M will repair or replace 80% of its housing system over the next ten years.

Real estate developer Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions has completed financial closing on a public-private partnership (P3) project to build additional on-campus student accommodation at William & Mary (W&M) in Williamsburg, Virginia, US.

The project is valued at more than $240m and construction is slated to begin this month with a completion date in late 2025.

The project construction team includes Balfour Beatty’s Buildings division and Kjellstrom+Lee, in Richmond, Virginia.

Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions vice-president and W&M alumnus Amy Aponte said: “We are delighted to work with William & Mary on this exciting renewal of on-campus housing.

“We hope these new communities embody the authentic William & Mary experience and that they house not only students but also the rich diversity of thought, traditions, culture and best of what is to come for this esteemed university.”

The project incorporates W&M’s Vision 2026 strategy, which includes a master plan for housing and dining to position the university to fulfil future strategic requirements.

William & Mary will repair or replace 80% of its housing system over the next ten years.

This first phase will include additional accommodation for 935 students at West Woods on the west campus and 269 students in a new facility near Lemon and Hardy Halls on Jamestown Road.

In support of W&M’s Climate Action Roadmap, which plans for a carbon-neutral campus by 2030, the new resident halls will be organised into modern living units and common areas. The halls will also be conditioned using geothermal heating and air conditioning.

W&M interim CEO Jackie Ferree said: “Balfour Beatty is the perfect partner for this complete revitalisation of the campus experience.

“Together, we can accomplish something that neither of us could do on our own, and that promises to benefit generations of William & Mary students.”

VDMO Architects designed the building in partnership with CMTA and William & Mary's leadership. The university will be managing the housing complex once it is completed.
