AirTrunk starts construction on third phase of TOK1 in Tokyo, Japan

The campus is claimed to be one of the largest data centers in Asia.

July 03 2023

Hyper-scale data centre developer AirTrunk has announced the commencement of construction on the third phase of the 300MW AirTrunk TOK1 campus in Inzai, Tokyo, Japan.

The third phase of the project includes a 55MW purpose-built building that will be used by an undisclosed technology customer.

It follows the ground-breaking of a 50MW facility at TOK2 in West Tokyo in February this year.

In September 2020, AirTrunk announced its plan to develop TOK1, which claims to be one of the largest independent data centres in Asia.

The campus currently provides public cloud clients with an opportunity to scale quickly to meet their increasing capacity targets in Japan.

Japanese construction conglomerate Daiwa House has been appointed to serve as the general contractor of the project.

The latest development comes shortly after AirTrunk unveiled plans to develop its second data centre, called AirTrunk HKG2, in Hong Kong in order to help meet the demand for crucial digital infrastructure in the region.

AirTrunk deputy CEO Michael Juniper said: “As a key international business hub, Hong Kong has ambitions to accelerate the development of a digital economy.

“Combined with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI), there is huge demand for cloud services and the supporting critical digital infrastructure.

“HKG2 will play an important role in responding to this demand.”
