AECOM has been selected to serve as the lead designer for the SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project in Seattle, Washington, US.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) aims to replace the existing bridge and create a new landscaped lid in the North Capitol Hill neighbourhood.

Upon completion, this project will offer new ramps, structures that are resilient to seismic activity, and enhanced connections to transit, local streets, and more.

AECOM, as part of a design-build team led by Skanska, will be responsible for supervising the technical design of two new parallel bridges that will replace the 1960s-era Portage Bay Bridge with a seismically stronger structure.

One bridge is for eastbound traffic and the other for westbound.

AECOM US West region CEO Matt Crane said: “We are excited to continue building on our decades-long relationship with the WSDOT, supporting the critical infrastructure needs of one of the Puget Sound region's busiest highway corridors.

“Our industry-leading experience spans every type of highway and bridge project, including several of the world’s largest design-build projects.”

The project's scope also includes the construction of a landscaped lid over State Road (SR) 520 between 10th Avenue East and Delmar Drive East.

This is expected to add approximately three acres of recreational open space, as well as reconnect communities previously divided by the highway.

The initiative also encompasses completing the SR 520 Program’s transit and high-occupancy vehicle enhancements.

These are expected to improve regional mobility between Redmond and Seattle.

Furthermore, the eastbound bridge will facilitate the extension of the regional bicycle and pedestrian SR 520 Trail across Portage Bay, integrating it with Seattle’s non-motorised trail network.

Last year, AECOM entered into a memorandum of understanding with Boryspil International Airport for the redevelopment of the airport in Ukraine.
