ADNOC develops high-speed hydrogen refuelling station in UAE

This station will use a clean grid electricity powered electrolyser to generate clean hydrogen from water.

July 19 2023

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has commenced the construction of the first high-speed hydrogen refuelling station in the Middle East.

Located in Masdar City, UAE, this facility will generate clean hydrogen from water using a clean grid electricity-powered electrolyser.

Additionally, ADNOC has partnered with Toyota Motor Corporation and Al-Futtaim Motors to test the high-speed hydrogen refuelling station with a fleet of clean hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Industry and Advanced Technology Minister and ADNOC managing director and Group CEO Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said: “The need to reduce carbon emissions to address climate change is clear and urgent.

“Hydrogen will be a critical fuel for the energy transition, helping to decarbonise economies at scale, and it is a natural extension of our core business.

“Through this pilot programme, we will gather important data on how hydrogen transportation technology performs as we continue to develop the UAE’s hydrogen infrastructure.”

The pilot programme will assist ADNOC in understanding how hydrogen with high-speed refuelling may best be utilised in mobility projects to support the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which seeks to place the country among the top hydrogen producers by 2031.

Once the station is completed later this year, it will be operated by ADNOC Distribution.

A standard hydrogen fuelling system will be installed at a second station at Dubai Golf City.
