Acciona has received a new contract to refurbish the old cargo terminal building at John Paul II International Airport in Kraków, Poland.

The Spanish infrastructure and energy company secured the contract through its Polish subsidiary, Mostostal Warszawa.

The project entails fully renovating the old building to transform it into a preboarding area with six extra gates.

The refurbishment will involve a partial demolition of the current building, alongside a comprehensive reorganisation and redesign of the interiors to establish temporary boarding lounges for non-Schengen passengers, the company said in a statement.

An important aspect of the project involves building a walkway on the first floor to connect the renovated building to the main passenger terminal.

Moreover, two new escalators will be added to link the upper floors to the ground floor.

The refurbishment plans also include upgrading the esplanade surrounding the building.

The airport will continue its operations throughout the construction period, with the project set for completion in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, the statement added.

Acciona has a history of projects at Kraków Airport, having recently completed a new cargo terminal and signed a contract in June for a central waste collection facility on the airport grounds.

Last month, Acciona, in collaboration with ACS Infrastructure and Meridiam, finalised the financial arrangements for the $11bn State Road 400 Express Lanes toll road project in Atlanta, Georgia, US.

The project award involved design, construction, operation, and maintenance over nearly 56 years.

Funding will come from both public and private sources, marking it as the reportedly largest public-private partnership bond financing initiative in the US to date.

The US Department of Transportation will contribute around $3.89bn via the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act, representing the largest loan ever granted under this initiative.

In July, meanwhile, the Government of Western Australia awarded a contract to Acciona to build a 27km electricity transmission line as part of the state’s Clean Energy Link - North initiative.

The project, valued at A$342m ($224.72m), comprises the installation of 6.7km of underground cables and 17km of overhead lines.
