ACCIONA wins contract for 4,000kW EV charging hub in Madrid

The hub will feature 20 ultra-fast charging points, with 19 designated for regular cars and one allocated for heavy-duty vehicles.

ACCIONA has secured a contract from the Madrid regional government to construct and operate a public electric vehicle (EV) charging hub inside Madrid’s M-30 ring road.

The site, located at 276 Paseo de la Castellana, will become the “largest” 100% renewable public charging facility within the area, ACCIONA said.

Scheduled for completion and operational in 2027, the planned infrastructure will offer a total installed capacity of 4,000 kilowatts (kW).

The hub will include 20 ultra-fast charging points with capacities of up to 400kW each, with 19 designated for regular cars and one allocated for heavy-duty vehicles.

A battery-swapping station dedicated to silence electric vehicles is also included in the facility’s design.

The development will repurpose a decommissioned petrol station, converting it into an EV charging hub spanning 1,281m2.

ACCIONA will operate the facility for a period of 30 years, using only certified renewable energy for vehicle charging.

The hub will incorporate solar panels for self-consumption, with projections indicating a net annual surplus of over 35,000kWh.

Additional features include a photocatalytic façade intended to remove pollutants from the air and a system providing real-time traceability of renewable energy usage.

A single canopy structure will cover both the charging points and a user services area. The ground floor will include vending machines and accessible toilets, while the first floor is set aside as a multipurpose space for outreach activities and events related to electric mobility.

The project design specifies materials such as wood, photocatalytic ceramic, and locally sourced natural stone. These decisions align with broader objectives to comply with city decarbonisation efforts.

ACCIONA currently provides access to more than 5,000 charging points in cities and along major intercity routes across Spain and Portugal.
