Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has revealed new details about a Dh872m ($237m) infrastructure project set to connect Ramhan and Jubail Islands to the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed highway, also known as E12.

The construction is currently underway on the development, which comprises seven bridges, three tunnels, and an extensive network of roads, ramps, and utility corridors.

The project, spanning 166,000m², aims to enhance traffic flow and accessibility in the area.

DMT expects the bridge network to be operational in the second quarter of 2027.

The scheme forms part of wider efforts to improve mobility links and support urban and economic growth in the United Arab Emirates.

According to DMT, the design includes environmentally conscious features such as energy-efficient LED lighting, which is intended to reduce both energy consumption and light pollution.

Project planners estimate that around 90% of construction waste, amounting to over 2,200t, will be recycled during the build phase, aligning with the department’s stated commitment to environmental responsibility.

DMT infrastructure development director general Eisa Mubarak Almazrouei said: “This sophisticated construction project represents an important part of Abu Dhabi's evolving transportation network, facilitating access to Ramhan and Jubail Islands while unlocking new development zones and economic opportunities.

“The initiative exemplifies DMT's strategic approach to creating integrated, liveable communities that enhance quality of life and support the emirate's rapid expansion.”

According to GlobalData, bridge construction in MENA has been affected in recent months by the US-Israel-Iran war. While direct airstrikes are expected to have physically damaged bridges inside conflict zones like Iran, the broader impact is likely to be seen due to an anticipated fall in new contract signings, supply chain disruptions, and developers invoking force majeure. Despite short-term headwinds, investments in MENA’s bridge construction sector will be supported by investments in road construction projects by several governments to boost connectivity.

Earlier this month, the DMT announced upcoming upgrades to key roads in Musaffah. The project is set to address congestion, improve safety, and reduce travel times in the area.

The planned works will affect approximately 13km along the E30 and 8th Street, targeting routes used for travel between the industrial district, Mohamed Bin Zayed City, and Zayed City.
