The UK Government has given its approval for the construction of Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA)-designed Vauxhall towers after completion of a public inquiry.
Approval was given by Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick for the £600m Vauxhall Cross Island development, which features 54 and 42-storey tower blocks linked by a ten-storey podium.
The plan was initially approved by the London Borough of Lambeth last year. However, owing to the local opposition, it was later called off by the then housing minister.
The project is situated across from Vauxhall Underground station in South London. It would provide 257 apartment units, along with offices, a hotel, and retail space.
It will also provide a vital civic space, amenities and employment for the growing Vauxhall community.
The Vauxhall towers are expected to become the first mixed-use residential and commercial building designed by ZHA.

By GlobalDataBeing developed by Great Marlborough Estates, the site will comprise the North Tower with 257 flats and the South Tower, which will include a hotel with 618 rooms.
ZHA has described this project as ‘a new gateway for Vauxhall’, with the potential to become its new town centre.
Planning inspector John Braithwaite was quoted by The Architect’s Journal as saying: “The proposed development, in architecture and urban townscape terms, would be of the highest quality and would successfully contribute to the planned cluster of tall buildings in Vauxhall.”
An official construction timeline for the project is yet to be announced. It is expected to generate about 2,000 new jobs in the region.
