Construction company YIT has received a contract to build and develop Garden Helsinki (GH) urban development project in Töölö district, Finland.

PES Architects’ Tuomas Silvennoinen and B&M Architects’ Tuomas Seppänen have been chosen to provide the design for the Garden Helsinki project.

The new block will have housing, entertainment and sports facilities and is expected to provide employment to around 1,000 workers.

Recreational facilities will be both inside the block and in the outdoor space that resembles a garden.

Local residents will have access to sports and restaurant services at the city block, which can also host events and comprises open public space.

“In planning Garden Helsinki, we have put particular emphasis on how it will serve as a stage for the daily life, hobbies and experiences of local residents.”

Project GH board chairman Timo Everi said: “In planning Garden Helsinki, we have put particular emphasis on how it will serve as a stage for the daily life, hobbies and experiences of local residents. It will also enhance people’s time management by housing recreational facilities and services under one roof.”

The urban project, which will be largely built underground, will house a sports and event arena that can host events related to sports and recreation. In addition, Garden Helsinki can host everyday meetings.

YIT Urban Development executive vice-president Juha Kostiainen said: “The Garden Helsinki project perfectly embodies our vision of more life in sustainable cities. In the increasingly dense urban environment, it will combine several different and attractive functions at a location that benefits from excellent public transport connections.”

Garden Helsinki is a privately funded sustainable urban development project, which is expected to generate revenue of approximately €100m for the city during the construction phase and create around 3,500 jobs.

Facilities to be created above ground will include business premises, hotel facilities and apartments.
