US-based Clark Construction Group has begun construction on a $271m project to expand Savannah Convention Center in Georgia, US.

Clark Construction is serving as the construction manager and general contractor of the project.

The scope of the project will include the doubling of the exhibit hall space in the convention centre to cover an area of 200,000ft².

It will also involve the addition of a 58ft-wide hangar door, a 40,000ft² ballroom, 15 additional meeting rooms, and a parking garage with 900 spaces.

The expansion project is expected to create 600 construction jobs over the next 27 months. It will also enable Savannah to compete to host larger conventions and events.

Clark Construction initially began work on the project in October 2018.

For the past 28 months, the construction firm worked closely with Savannah-Georgia Convention Center Authority (SGCCA), Georgia State Financing, and Investment Commission (GSFIC) to support budgeting efforts, design development, and procurement of subcontractor.

Clark Construction senior vice president overseeing construction efforts on the project Keith Couch said: “We are delighted to partner with SGCCA to bring to life their vision and deliver a world-class facility to the City of Savannah.”

Work on the project is set to be completed in 2023. The Savannah Convention Center will remain open during the expansion project.

GSFIC’s construction division deputy executive director Marvin Woodward said: “Clark Construction was selected for this project because of their experience in constructing conventions centres all over the United States. We certainly look forward to working with them on this major project.”
