Veidekke‘s subsidiary, Tore Løkke, has been appointed as the main contractor for the rehabilitation of the Nyhellervatn dam in Aurland municipality, Norway.

Hafslund Eco Vannkraft selected Tore Løkke for this project.

This assignment is valued at approximately Nkr200m ($18.12m) without VAT.

The project underscores high environmental ambitions, including the use of electrical construction machinery and renewable biofuels.

Hafslund Eco Vannkraft CEO Kristin Lian said: “Hafslund wants to work to ensure that the development of renewable energy takes place with as many renewable and emission-free solutions as possible.

“We therefore have a goal of reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions by 90% and emissions from the value chain by 50% by 2030. This project is an important step towards this goal.”

The Nyhellervatn dam, situated at 1,400m above sea level in Nordfjella, is set for reinforcement to meet regulatory requirements.

The dam, which spans 650m in length and reaches a maximum height of 84m, forms the Nyheller reservoir, serving as the intake for the Aurland 3 pump power plant.

Approximately 400,000m³ of rock material will be used to strengthen the dam.

The project aims to leverage electrical construction machinery to perform much of the heavy work, reducing emissions and environmental impact.

For tasks where emission-free and electrical solutions are not viable, the project will use renewable biofuels as an alternative.

Tore Løkke CEO Tore Crister Løkke said: “We really appreciate the commission. The construction and rehabilitation of dam facilities and hydropower plants is one of our core businesses and an area in which we have long and broad experience.

“At the same time, we greatly appreciate Hafslund’s high environmental ambitions and that we together will find new solutions for sustainable production high up in the mountains.”

Construction is scheduled to commence in May this year, with an anticipated completion in 2026.

This contract is being recorded in Veidekke’s order book for the second quarter of this year.

This comes after Veidekke’s Danish subsidiary Hoffmann secured a contract with Square Copenhagen last week.

The contract entails the renovation and reconstruction of Helmerhus building at Copenhagen City Hall Square, Denmark.
