A turf cutting event was held at North Chadderton Secondary School in the UK to mark the start of expansion works on site.

The 1,670m2 expansion project is being delivered by construction company Kier.

The company has been appointed by Oldham Council via the new Procure North West Framework.

Kier will be responsible to design and construct a new science block featuring six fully serviced laboratories, a fit-for-purpose library, and two prep rooms.

The work scope also includes sports with changing facilities and a classroom, as well as a café space and sheltered external hard standing areas.

The project is expected to complete by the end of this year.

Upon completion, North Chadderton Secondary School will have new facilities added to its learning environment.

Kier has committed to employ 50% local people and will appoint 18 local direct employees throughout the project’s duration.

In addition, the construction firm has agreed to provide 16 hours given to support young people into work, as well as allocate 124 hours to local school and college visits. It has also agreed to give 187 weeks to local apprentices.

Kier Construction North and Scotland regional director Sean Fenner said: “We are delighted to be starting works to develop the current footprint at North Chadderton School for Oldham Council.

“The new and improved learning environments will help to inspire pupils and the project provides modern facilities which will remove barriers to learning and increase the likelihood of children and young people realising their full potential.

“This scheme builds on our extensive experience in the North West, where we have recently delivered over £36m worth of secondary education facilities in the last two years, including the Queensferry Pupil Referral Unit in North Wales.”
