Global energy company BP has awarded a contract to Technip Energies for a hydrogen production unit at its Kwinana biorefinery in Western Australia.

Under the contract, Technip Energies will undertake engineering, procurement and fabrication (EPF) for the modularised hydrogen production unit.

It will use its steam methane reforming (SMR) technology to build the unit.

With a capacity of 33,000 normal cubic metres an hour, the unit will allow production of hydrogen from either natural gas or biogas produced by the Kwinana biorefinery. 

The hydrogen can be used for the conversion of bio feedstocks into biofuels such as sustainable aviation fuel and biodiesel.

The Kwinana Renewable Fuels project forms part of bp’s planned development of five biofuel production projects worldwide.

Technip Energies’s gas and low-carbon energies senior vice-president Loic Chapuis said: “We are pleased to build on our global leadership in the delivery of hydrogen production units to support bp’s expansion of its biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel businesses.

“By leveraging our expertise in modularisation and proprietary hydrogen technology, we are committed to making this project an industrial success.”

Technip Energies said the contract is “significant” and represents revenue of between €50m and €250m.

Last month, Technip Energies secured project management consultancy contract from Aramco for the master plan of Ras Al Khair, a new industrial city in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
