Austrian construction company STRABAG has secured a €40m (RON192m) follow-up contract from Romanian motorway company Compania Nationala de Administrare a Infrastructurii Rutier (CNAIR).

As per the contract, Strabag will build a 4.5km section on the A3 motorway between Ungheni and Târgu Mureș and a 4.7km long, four-lane spur route.

Strabag expects to begin the work next month and the work could take 18 months to complete.

Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel said: “A follow-up order is always a positive sign that our work has been valued by the client. After handing over the 10.1 km section between Ungheni and Ogra in 2018, we are happy to continue working on this central traffic artery.”

In 2018, Strabag completed the Ungheni – Ogra section of the A3 motorway.

In April, Strabag had secured a contract to build a 640m cable-stayed bridge across the River Someș in the western Romanian city of Satu Mare. Worth (€30m) RON142m, the contract was signed with the representatives of the municipality of Satu Mare.

Construction was scheduled to start this May.

The bridge’s construction is being undertaken to better link the north and the south of the city and relieve the volume of traffic on the existing Decebal Bridge. The contract also includes two viaducts and the two adjacent roundabouts.

During the construction, existing utility lines such as gas, telecommunications, water and sewage will be taken into account or partly relaid, the company said.

Thomas Birtel said: “Despite the restrictions on public life currently in place in many of our European countries of operation, it is important not to lose sight of the long-term perspective and to continue to pursue important infrastructure projects such as this in Romania.”

Recently, the company had also secured a contract in Hungary for the construction of a 7.5km bypass road for the city of Veszprém.

Worth €72m, the contract will be carried in two phases. The first phase is expected for completion by next December and the second phase in early 2023.
