Canadian design firm Stantec is leading the first phase of the $3bn Pure Water San Diego programme to supply local, sustainable water to more than 1.4 million residents of San Diego, US.

Since 2015, the company is working in partnership with Brown and Caldwell and the City of San Diego to bring the programme to life and supply safe, high-quality water to California’s city.

The Pure Water San Diego programme is a phased, multi-year programme that will provide one-third of San Diego’s water supply locally by the end of 2035.

It will transform the City’s existing water system to maximise the use and reuse of its own water supply and provided a cost-effective investment for the city’s water needs.

The design firm will lead the team to provide programme management services for the multibillion-dollar initiative.

It will create a programme-wide delivery strategy and robust program governance structure with associated procedures, plans, controls, business processes, and reporting requirements.

The company has developed the preliminary designs and is now providing independent review for the final designs, construction planning, and operation and maintenance readiness planning.

Currently, the Stantec team is also providing ongoing regulatory support to San Diego.

The city has now released a solicitation schedule for construction bids for the first phase of the programme and is expected to receive bids for two of the larger construction contracts this month.

Phase 1 will include a series of facilities and pipelines to clean recycled water and produce nearly 30 million gallons of high-quality, purified water per day.

The Morena Pump Station and Pipelines, North City Water Reclamation Plant Expansion, North City Pure Water Facility, and North City Pure Water Pump Station and Pipeline are the key projects of the first phase.

Furthermore, the second phase of the programme is currently in the planning stage and will involve the construction of one or more additional advanced water treatment plants.
