Construction firm Skanska has secured a contract worth £52m from Network Rail to replace a bridge in the West Midlands region, UK.

Under the contract, the construction firm will replace the SAS13 bridge on the Stechford to Aston (SAS) rail line towards the east of Birmingham.

The existing bridge, which features eight masonry arches and a central steelwork span, will be demolished. It will be replaced with a single 92m span steel structure.

The works on the new bridge will pave the way for the construction of the new High Speed 2 line approach into Birmingham City centre. They will also pave the way for the planned High Speed 2 Midlands Maintenance Depot.

Work on the bridge is expected to start this month and is expected to be completed by September 2022.

The contract will be included in the order bookings for Europe in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Earlier this week, Skanska won an order worth £180m from British Land to construct Blossom Street, London.

The scope of the contract will include the construction of about 46,300m² of commercial, retail, public realm and housing units and installation of the mechanical, electrical and public health services for the project.

Construction on the office building, which aims to achieve BREEAM excellent rating, will begin in early 2021 and is set to complete in 2023.
