Sarpsborg municipality in Norway has awarded a design-and-build contract for the expansion and upgrade of the Alvim treatment plant.

Awarded to Veidekke, the contract is worth Nkr253m ($24.31m), excluding VAT.

Veidekke Leif Grimsrud general manager Magnar Kristiansen said: “We’re looking forward to extending the good partnership we already have with Sarpsborg municipality from the contract with the preparatory works at the treatment plant.

“This new contract will be carried out in a partnership between Veidekke’s Leif Grimsrud and Veidekke Bygg Østfold Follo departments.”

The Alvim treatment plant, constructed in the late 1980s, is set to be upgraded to comply with the discharge permits issued by the state administrator.

The project is also aimed at accommodating the needs of a growing population and industrial development in the municipality.

Veidekke will be responsible for the construction of a new biotreatment plant with nitrogen treatment, a new administration building and garage, and the rehabilitation of existing structures.

The new facility is designed to leverage the current plant’s capabilities while developing a future-oriented plant that efficiently manages sewage resources.

The current chemical purification plant will be enhanced with biological nutrient salt removal, preparing it for anticipated future purification standards.

In addition, the project prioritises sustainability, with considerations for a circular economy, greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, and resource recovery.

Veidekke Bygg Østfold Follo general manager Bård Degnes said: “We are very pleased to be chosen to carry out this assignment. We appreciate Sarpsborg municipality’s confidence in us and are looking forward to the startup and implementation of the project.”

Construction and foundation works are scheduled to commence in June this year, with completion expected in December 2026.

Recently, Veidekke‘s subsidiary Grande Entreprenør signed a contract with Berg Eiendom Røra for a new chicken slaughterhouse for Berika in Trøndelag.
