Architectural firms Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) and China Northeast Architectural Design & Research Institute (Shenzhen) (CNADRI) have won a design contest for Terminal 4 at Bao’an International Airport in Shenzhen, China.

AECOM and Railway 2 will also part of the project, which will include construction of a new 400,000m2 terminal building with 60 new stands and connections to the mid-field satellite.

To be built at the centre of a new ‘airport city’, the new terminal will provide connections to the existing and new transport infrastructure and will have capacity to handle approximately 31 million passengers a year.

The design includes an interior central garden, with landscaped pathways leading towards the airside, landside and transportation connections within the terminal.

RSHP partner Andrew Tyley said: “The design concept has at its heart a 10,000 sq m central garden space, the size of 40 tennis courts. The garden acts as the front door to Shenzhen connecting and integrating ground and air travel.”

The new terminal building will also feature extensive vegetation, displacement ventilation, rainwater harvesting and a substantial area of off-site prefabrication.
