RB Rail, the Rail Baltica global project coordinator and joint venture, has announced a tender for design and design supervision services for building the Kaunas Urban Node – Vilnius Urban Node section.

This section will be undertaken in cooperation with LTG Infra, which is responsible for carrying out the Rail Baltica project in Lithuania.

The first procurement stage is anticipated to be finished by the end of this year.

Contract for design and design supervision services for building the 65km-long line from Kaunas Urban Node to Vilnius Urban Node is expected to be signed in second half of 2023.

The qualification stage applications are anticipated to be submitted by 14 October this year.

RB Rail Lithuanian branch head Marius Narmontas said: “One of our key strategic goals is to ensure healthy and transparent competition in the Rail Baltica procurements constantly developing the best practice. Re-launch will help to integrate in the procurement regulation revised qualification requirements allowing wider market participation.”

Under the contract, the selected entity is expected to provide design and design supervision services for the construction of railway track substructure, superstructure, as well as associated civil structures on the new standard gauge (1435mm) high-speed double track, electrified railway Rail Baltica line section from Kaunas Urban Node to Vilnius Urban Node.

The preliminary scope of this section comprises 1435 mm gauge railway double track of around 65km length, rebuilding about 16km of the current 1520 mm gauge railway line, three passing loops, ten road viaducts, one road tunnel, 13 railway viaducts, eight wildlife crossings, 15 culverts, and other infrastructure and utilities.

The total contract will be split into smaller sections.

Among the master design services to be provided include site investigations, design proposals, procurement of building permit.

Trains will run up to 249 km/h on the Rail Baltica line.

The contract also envisages the provision of detailed technical design and design author supervision services to be offered upon request.

The aim of this project is to eliminate the current missing link of EU track gauge joining between the Baltic states with the rest of the North Sea.
