Peel L&P’s subsidiary Peel NRE, the owner of the former Fiddler’s Ferry power station site, has selected UK-based demolition contractor PP O’Connor to begin the phased demolition of the site’s power station in Cheshire, England.

The power station was previously owned by SSE Thermal and was decommissioned in 2020.

A ten-to-15-year master plan by Peel NRE outlines the development of the 820-acre site by demolishing the former power station and creating industrial and logistics space in its place. Phase one of the redevelopment is expected to create more than 2,100 jobs.

Peel NRE aims to bring the site back into productive use while ensuring that it contributes to the local economy.

The developer submitted a prior approval notice to Warrington Borough Council last September, highlighting the process of demolition. The application has since been approved.

PP O’Connor was selected through a competitive tender process.

The developer noted that before the cooling towers are demolished, extensive work will be taken to ensure the highest safety standards are followed. Residents will be kept up to date throughout the process.

The first stage will include a phased demolition of the coal stockyard, the four cooling towers on the northern side of the site, and some of the former administrative buildings at the site. The cooling towers are expected to be demolished by the end of next January.

Peel NRE development director Kieran Tames said: “This announcement is one of the most exciting of this project so far and marks another major milestone in the redevelopment of Fiddler’s Ferry.

“It’s reassuring to be working with industry experts, PP O’Connor as we demolish one of the countries last remaining coal-fired power stations.

“We know that the demolition has been anticipated by communities, not just in Warrington but across the region so will ensure that residents will be kept updated on our demolition plans as we develop a precise timetable.”
