Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) Government has confirmed planning approval for a new A$2bn ($1.4bn) Bankstown Hospital, with demolition and site remediation already underway in Bankstown’s central business district in Sydney.

Multiplex has been named as the early contractor involvement partner, tasked with finalising the design in collaboration with the project team, designers, hospital clinicians, and staff ahead of the main construction phase.

The State Significant Development application was recently approved, marking a milestone for what the government describes as the largest single capital investment in a public hospital in NSW’s history.

The new hospital is due to start main construction in 2027, following ongoing demolition and site remediation activities scheduled to continue throughout 2026.

According to the plans, the new 14-storey hospital will increase bed capacity and treatment spaces, aiming to enhance healthcare provision for Sydney’s south-west communities.

The project will include a multi-storey car park, expanded emergency department, operating theatres, and an intensive care unit. It will also provide services for women and children (including maternity), mental health inpatient care, ambulatory care, cancer facilities, and aged care health services.

A separate emergency drop-off area and dedicated parking for emergency patients and carers are also part of the proposal.

NSW health minister Ryan Park said: “The new A$2bn Bankstown Hospital is part of the A$3.8bn the Minns Labor Government is investing in Western Sydney hospitals over the next four years.

“The state-of-the-art new Bankstown Hospital will deliver more beds and treatment spaces and deliver critical care for the growing population of south-west Sydney that will help meet the healthcare needs of the fast-growing and diverse community.”

NSW planning and public spaces minister Paul Scully said: “This approval is a major boost for Bankstown, giving local communities better access to modern health facilities closer to home.

“Well located near public transport, including the future Bankstown Metro station, the new hospital will support the renewal of the city centre while making it easier for patients, staff and visitors to access services.”

Project planning will continue, with ongoing consultation involving hospital staff, carers, patients, visitors, and community members as design detail progresses.

The final service offering for the hospital is expected to be confirmed as planning advances.

Earlier this month, the NSW government reached a construction milestone at the A$540m Westmead Centre for Mental Health.
