Dublin-based Perrigo hosted the ground-breaking ceremony of its new North American headquarters (HQ) in downtown Grand Rapids, also known as the Medical Mile, Michigan, the US.

The drug manufacturer and maker of self-care consumer products is partnered on this project by Health Innovation Partners, which is the real estate development joint venture between Rockford Construction/Rockford Development, Walsh Construction/Walsh Investors, Murphy Development Group and Michigan State University (MSU).

The HQ project forms part of MSU’s Innovation Park in Grand Rapids.

The 125,000 ft2 building comprises a 63,550 ft2 of office space on the building’s top three floors, which will be the home base for Perrigo’s Consumer Self-Care Americas business. This will, in turn, see the addition of about 170 new employees for Perrigo, which already has a workforce of over 4,000 in West Michigan and over 11,000 worldwide.

Perrigo president and CEO Murray Kessler said: “Our new North American corporate headquarters location allows us to build upon the legacy we’ve established in West Michigan while collaborating with our new neighbours along this world-renowned corridor. We believe this hub will serve as a catalyst for continued advancements in the self-care space, and we look forward to being part of the impactful work that will occur in MSU’s Innovation Park for generations to come.”

Michigan State University health sciences executive vice-president Norman Beauchamp Jr. said: “MSU’s partnership with Perrigo Company brings the best minds and talents of industry and academia together in the pursuit of elevating quality health outcomes. Results of these synergies will be transformative by offering consumers new medical devices, therapies and technologies to improve and manage their own health in their homes.”

This is the third development led by Health Innovations Partners in the Innovation Park.

Rockford Construction real estate development president Mike Mraz said: “The partners involved in this project are truly indicative of the strength of West Michigan’s business, education and health care communities. As a Health Innovation Partner, Rockford has seen the impact public-private partnerships can have in putting West Michigan and the Medical Mile on the map for not only health care but also health innovation.”

Construction is scheduled for completion in 2022.
