Paulig has commenced construction of a new €45m tortilla plant in Roeselare, Belgium.

The firm intends to bolster its position in Europe, with this facility.

This new carbon neutral plant will be in line with the company’s ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations by 80% by 2030 from a 2018 baseline.

Commencement of production of Santa Maria and Poco Loco tortillas in the new facility is expected in the spring of 2022.

Paulig CEO Rolf Ladau said: “Paulig aims to be one of Europe’s fastest growing companies in the food & beverage industry and a sustainable frontrunner. This new factory in Belgium will allow us to drive the further growth of the Tex Mex category and increase our innovation capabilities. We believe that business growth and sustainability can go hand in hand and therefore, our aim is to make the new plant carbon neutral from the start. We want to create a new, sustainable food culture that is good for both people and planet.”

Paulig SVP supply chain and sourcing Thomas Pantel said: “In this new factory, we can integrate the best practices from our existing plants to maximize energy efficiency and minimize the climate impacts. The location of the factory also allows to optimize the logistics flows and reduce transportation needed. The production facility will be connected with a bridge to the adjacent distribution center, thus eliminating the on-road transportation need for warehousing purposes.”

Paulig intends to make all ten of its existing factories in six countries carbon neutral by 2023.
