Building materials designer Onyx Solar has installed its photovoltaic glass as the façade of Coca-Cola bottle manufacturer Femsa’s headquarters in Monterrey, Mexico.
Femsa’s retrofit is saving the building more than 5,500kW an hour in power, as well as reducing CO2 emission by 2.7t.
The façade comprises a double layer of photovoltaic glass and each glass module is made of large dimensions of amorphous silicon technology.
Onyx Solar designed and manufactured the glass modules specifically for Femsa’s headquarters, to provide privacy in the interior space while preserving the building’s original aesthetic value.
With a semi-transparency degree of 20%, the glass allows natural light to enter the building lowering the use of artificial lighting and improving the indoor comfort for the occupants.
Onyx Solar’s photovoltaic glass for façades also improves buildings’ thermal properties. Installing photovoltaic low-e glass in warm climates such as Mexico, cuts the need for air-conditioning by up to 50% more than traditional façade insulations, saving energy and low-term costs.
