University of Leicester roof replacement

Australian property and infrastructure firm Lendlease and British engineering company Arup are preparing to start replacement works for the Engineering Building roof at University of Leicester in the UK.

Reconstruction works are part of the new £19.5m project launched by the university for replacement of its glass roof and vertical glazed facades.

Developed in the 1960s, the original Grade II-listed building was designed by architects Stirling and Gowan and is considered as an icon.

Lendlease is the management contractor for the university while Arup Group will offer professional consultancy, facade, structural, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and principal designer services for the project.

"The university takes very seriously its responsibility to care for this world famous building."

Expected to be completed by the end of 2016, the project has been partially funded through a European Investment Bank loan with the remaining expenses being contributed by the university.

Project works will include ‘replacing each of the 2,500 glass panels of the innovative 45°, patent-glazed, diamond-shaped roof, designed to provide north light to the engineering research laboratories and workshops’, the university said.
