Swedish-based home furnishings retailer Ikea has submitted its plan to the City of Dublin, California, US to establish its third store, Ikea Dublin, in the San Francisco area.

After receiving approval, Ikea plans to begin construction of the new store by next year, which will be the company’s ninth outlet in the state.

Scheduled to be opened by 2018, the proposed store will cover a 21 acres area, which includes 339,000ft² of space dedicated for the store and parking space for 1,150 vehicles.

In addition, six acres of space adjacent to Ikea will be developed to house 52,000ft² of additional space, which will be used for establishing retail, restaurant and a boutique hotel.

The company is also planning to assess the possibility of on-site power generation to complement its existing US renewable energy presence at nearly 90% of its US locations.

Ikea US president Lars Petersson said: "We continue to be thrilled with the reception afforded us in the Bay Area, so we are excited about submitting plans for IKEA Dublin to extend our reach further into the East Bay.

The new store will include around 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a 450-seat restaurant serving Swedish cuisines including meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes.

During the construction phase, the project expects to create more than 500 jobs and once completed, the store would employ around 350 people.

Currently, Ikea has more than 380 stores in 47 countries.

The company recently stated that its store in Las Vegas, US, will be opened in May this year.
