Building

Hopkins Architects has secured approval for a new £24m Research and Education Building at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, UK.

The 3-storey facility for children and young people is planned to be built in two separate phases, one of 3,660m² and the other of 3,293m².

Construction is expected to start in June with works planned for completion in 2015.

The building will feature a curvilinear central atrium that will be formed by a series of open yet intimate spaces and will contain voids, bridges, meeting and write-up spaces as well as garden terraces.

Two modular side wings will house research and teaching laboratories, offices, meeting rooms, lecture theatres, breakout spaces and a café and library.

Sustainable elements of the project include green credentials, which will be both built into the fabric of the building as well as visibly apparent in its form and material.

Hopkins said that the building, which is expected to secure a BREEAM Excellent rating, complements and sits within the existing master plan, maximising the site’s footprint.

The facility’s corridor-free interior encourages interaction and collaboration between researchers and visitors and establishes various connections between the adjacent hospital, the neighbourhood and the park.

Hopkins won the competition to design the building for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in autumn 2013.
