Herzog & de Meuron has designed a ‘box-like’ shop for Tokyo’s fashion brand Miu Miu in Aoyama district.
The 720m² building is located on Miyuki street. It is cited diagonally across the street from the crystalline Prada Aoyama, which was completed by Herzog & de Meuron in 2003.

The understated metallic surface of the Miu Miu façade is opaque in contrast to the transparent façade of the all-glass Prada building, and is claimed to lend an intimate quality to the project.
Miu Miu Aoyama looks like a home, and hidden as well as opaque and is placed directly at street level.
Under the oversized canopy, the two-storey interior of Miu Miu Aoyama opaque structure has a steel facade that angles away from the glass glazing on the front of the building and is visible at a single glance.
The steel facade shades the interior while offering passers-by a glimpse inside and serves as a giant metal awning.

According to Herzog & de Meuron, Miu Miu Aoyama is the company’s latest project of an ongoing collaboration with Prada.
Italian designer Miuccia Prada, who leads Miu Miu, appointed the Swiss architect firm to create their seminal Tokyo Prada store on the other side of the same road in 2000, according to dezeen.
The company was briefed to create a building, the design of which would be in accordance with zoning regulations that limited its height.
