Energy firm Exelon, its sister agencies and other private donors have granted $25m funding for construction of a new recreational facility at Addams Park located near Pilsen in Chicago, US.

The new project will include the development of a 100,000ft² indoor athletic facility and adjacent outdoor field improvements.

Dubbed Exelon Student Recreation Centre, the multi-purpose indoor facility will feature an indoor track, artificial turf field, basketball courts, and various community rooms.

It is expected to support multiple activities and events such as athletic league programmes and regional competitive events for community youth and young adults.

The outdoor improvements being planned for the current 9.24-acre park comprise the addition of a natural turf baseball field, an artificial turf combination field for baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer, and a walking path to be laid around the park.

Estimated to be completed by December 2019, the extended park is expected to serve approximately 7,500 new residents, who are set to move into the adjacent 120-acre mixed-income Roosevelt Square development.

The investment for the construction of the recreation centre building is $20m, while $5m is allocated for field improvements, parking, walking paths, landscape, and lighting.
