Engineering company Mott MacDonald has secured a new contract from the Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) to provide sustainable transport consultancy services for the Red Sea Project in Saudi Arabia.

The contract requires Mott MacDonald to provide a comprehensive analysis of the total land, sea, and air transportation requirement for the development and operation of the 28,000km² tourism destination, from its opening scheduled in 2022 to its completion in 2030.

The work will involve devising a strategy to deliver a destination-wide clean mobility transportation system using electric and hydrogen vehicles, boats and aircraft.

The company will also identify appropriate supporting infrastructure that includes electric and hydrogen vehicle charging stations, aligned with TRSDC’s plans to power the tourism destination with 100% renewable power.

The vehicle fleet to be considered will include e-bikes, golf buggies, cars, vans, trucks, buses, seaplanes, helicopters, VTOL, passenger ferries, boats, maintenance vehicles, airside vehicles and off-road leisure pursuit vehicles.

Additionally, the engineering company will also suggest the best fleet propulsion systems from a range of available sustainable options.

TRSDC said that the appointment of Mott MacDonald is an important development in the Phase One of the project, which is currently underway.

Mott MacDonald Middle East managing director Chris Seymour said: “At Mott MacDonald, we embed the key aspects of sustainable development into all our projects and business activities.

“Sustainable development is a matter of making choices and decisions that satisfy all relevant social, economic and environmental concerns, and is an area where TRSDC is setting new standards.

“We’re looking forward to being part of shaping this beautiful destination and supporting TRSDC’s progressive sustainability initiatives.”

Once complete, the destination will feature 50 hotels and 1,300 residential properties across 22 islands and six inland sites.
