Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has received approval from the Westminster City Council to build two new stands at the Lord’s cricket stadium in London, UK.
The two new three-tier stands are set to replace the existing Compton and Edrich stands named after former English batsmen Denis Compton and Bill Edrich.
The new stands will increase the stadium’s seating capacity by 2,500 to take the overall capacity to 31,000.
The £50m redevelopment of the stands marks the second phase of the ground’s updated masterplan.
UK-based architecture firm WilkinsonEyre is responsible for preparing designs for the redevelopment in line with the overall architectural identity of Lord’s and the ‘village cricket green’ ethos.
MCC chief executive and secretary Guy Lavender said: “We are excited to be commencing another transformational development at Lord’s, and by raising the capacity to 31,000 we will be able to welcome more spectators to enjoy matches at the largest cricket ground in the country, here at the Home of Cricket.

By GlobalData“The redevelopment will be an outstanding addition delivering world-class facilities, ensuring that Lord’s remains the finest ground in the world to watch, and play cricket.”
MCC noted that once the redevelopment is completed, the stands will offer integrated catering and vastly improved sightlines for spectators seated in the lower levels.
Other amenities include wheelchair-accessible spaces, as well as lift access at all levels. The new stands will have a seating capacity of 11,500.
Construction is expected to begin on 24 August following the completion of the second Ashes test between England and Australia at the ground.
The new stands will be made available for the public during the 2020 season. MCC further added that the fully fitted-out facilities would be completed by 2021.
