Larsen & Toubro’s construction unit L&T Construction has won an order to build a new road bridge that will connect the Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya across river Brahmaputra.
L&T has classified the order as ‘large’ contract, which is worth between INR25bn ($338m) and INR50bn ($676m).
Touted to be the longest road bridge in the country, the 19km-long bridge will connect Dhubri in Assam and Phulbari in Meghalaya.
The project, to be constructed along National Highway 127-B, will include a 2.6km navigation bridge, approach viaducts of 3.5km on the Dhubri side as well as 2.2km on the Phulbari side.
Both sides are connected with approach roads and interchanges.
Upon completion, the bridge will enhance the connectivity between the north-eastern states and the rest of the country.

By GlobalDataL&T whole time director and civil infrastructure senior executive vice president SV Desai said: “This is an extremely challenging project, and we thank our client, National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. for reposing confidence in our capability to build a such a defining piece of infrastructure.
“Not only will it be an important passage for offering easier access to our North Eastern international borders but will give a huge fillip to trade and commerce in the region for the accelerated development of all the North Eastern States especially Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and the Barak Valley.”
The road bridge will reduce the distance between Assam and Meghalaya by 250km. The current travel time between Dhubri and Phulbari by ferry is about 2.5 hours.
