American affordable housing developer Lincoln Avenue Communities (LAC) has started construction on a new affordable residential development project in San Antonio, Texas, US.

The construction start was marked by a ground-breaking ceremony and saw LAC officials join City of San Antonio representatives for the event. Leon Creek Flats is backed by the city’s 2022 Affordable Housing Bond.

LAC is celebrating its development collaboration with the San Antonio Housing Trust, which will see the construction of 308 affordable houses for San Antonio locals.

The project is partly funded by a soft loan from the City of San Antonio’s 2022-2023 Housing Bond Programme and other sources.

San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg said: “Housing affordability has remained a key initiative for our city that started with the formation of the Housing Task Force.

“Communities like the one celebrated today represent the collective efforts to produce housing affordability for San Antonio renters.”

Leon Creek Flats is said to be the first ground-up affordable residential project of LAC in Texas.

An estimated $2.5m in housing financing is supporting the development, which will build 261 houses for families earning less than 60% of the area median income (AMI) and 47 affordable units for households earning at or below 30% AMI.

LAC Regional Project partner and vice-president Blake Hopkins said: “LAC is committed to building high-quality affordable homes in communities where residents are burdened by high housing costs.

“This development will bring hundreds of affordable homes to San Antonio and help address the region’s affordable housing crisis.”

The development is set for completion in 2025.
