Kier, a construction and infrastructure services provider, has commenced work on Paisley Museum’s £42m transformation project in Scotland.

The Renfrewshire Council has awarded the contract, which will support Paisley Museum’s ambitions to make it a key cultural destination and is expected to attract 128,000 visitors each year.

The scope of work involves redevelopment of four buildings, which includes two grade A listed buildings including a Scotland’s first public Observatory.

Work on the project is to provide improved accessibility and the new west wing will provide access through the museum.

The project will also include conversion of an adjacent building, a former library, into a new space for objects from Paisley’s collections.

It will also include a new entrance hall, shop, learning spaces and café within the building.

Kier will work with Renfrewshire Council as well as local supply chain partners to deliver this project.

Work on the project is anticipated to complete by late 2022 and the museum is planned to be reopened to the public in 2023.

Renfrewshire Leisure chair Lisa-Marie Hughes said: “The beginning of work starting on site is a major step forward in our journey to transform Paisley Museum into a world-class destination, bringing in visitors from across Scotland, the UK and abroad.

“The project is part of a wider investment by the council in Paisley’s venues to transform the town centre and take the work already done to make the town a key cultural destination within Scotland to a new level.”
