HIF Global has announced its plans to start construction of Australia’s first carbon-neutral eFuels production facility in 2024, in northwest Tasmania.

HIF Asia Pacific, a subsidiary of HIF Global, has submitted a Notice of Intent (NoI) with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Authority (EPA), seeking approval for the facility.

Once the facility reaches its full operational capacity, it will produce up to 100 million litres of carbon-neutral eFuels annually.

The annual of production eFuels is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by around 260,000t annually, which is equivalent to decarbonising 52,000 cars.

HIF Global president and CEO Cesar Norton said: “Our global plan is to produce over 8 billion litres a year of carbon neutral eFuels - enough to decarbonise 5 million vehicles. Australia represents our third decarbonisation hub around the world. Australia has exceptional renewable energy resources that can be transformed into liquid fuels and used in existing engines.

“We begin the first step in Tasmania to produce hydrogen from renewable energy, capture carbon dioxide from a biogenic source and produce highly competitive eFuels that will be the carbon neutral energy of tomorrow.”

To be located about 30 km south of Burnie, the facility, with 250MW of electrolyser capacity and at least 40 years of operating life, will feature design similar to other eFuel facilities in Chile and the US that the company is preparing to build next year.

Designed to be emissions-free, the water for electrolysis will be primarily draw from biowaste.
