Granite has secured an estimated $66m contract from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for improvements to the Caldwell Avenue interchange on State Route 99 (SR99) in Visalia, California, US.

The project is being financed via state and federal contributions.

This contract entails constructing two new precast girder bridges, including a two-span structure over SR99 and a single-span structure over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Additionally, 12 new retaining walls will be erected, utilising various construction methods such as cast-in-place concrete, mechanically stabilised earth walls, and soldier pile walls with timber lagging.

To improve the interchange’s accessibility, four new on/off ramps are planned, complemented by new roundabouts for traffic control at each ramp set.

The project will require approximately 216,000 cubic yards of import borrow to broaden the embankments for the roadways adjacent to the new bridges.

The development also encompasses upgrades to the site’s drainage systems, the installation of pavement delineation and roadside signage, and the replacement of highway electrical items.

Construction is anticipated to commence in August 2025 and reach completion in the second quarter (Q2) of 2027.

This development will be included in Granite’s Q1 2025 order book.

Granite area manager Jeff Grimm said: “Our team is committed to enhancing infrastructure and improving safety for our community and the travelling public.

“This project is near another pavement rehabilitation project in Tulare that [we] will be working on in 2025 creating synergies between the two projects.”

Last month, Granite also announced securing a $78m contract from Caltrans for another infrastructure initiative in Orange County, California.

Moreover, the company recently completed the BNSF Needles Third Main Track Project, which involved the addition of a 29-mile third rail line next to an existing track.
