Dutch multinational public company Fugro has been awarded a contract by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in the US to provide site characterisation services in support of a $250m highway improvement project near Dallas.

Under the five-year (2019-2024) indefinite delivery indefinite quantity contract (IDIQ), Fugro will be responsible for undertaking a comprehensive geotechnical campaign totalling nearly 400 soil boreholes and over 200 pavement cores.

The TxDOT highway improvement project aims to reduce congestion and improve safety at the interchange of US Highway 80 and Interstate Highway 635.

It involves improvement to multiple new and reconstructed bridges, retaining structures, noise walls, traffic lanes and frontage roads as well as reconstructing the existing interchange.

Fugro said that the final deliverables for the infrastructure project are planned for March 2021.

Fugro US land site characterisation and consulting director Ray Wood said: “Given a long and successful history with TxDOT, we are thrilled to be participating in this important project.

“In the past several years, the Dallas District has utilised Fugro’s services for other complex projects. We understand the critical nature of their mission and are pleased to help them ensure safe and reliable transportation systems throughout the region.”

Furgo plans to conduct laboratory testing of selected soil and rock samples at its Dallas facility to assess the strength and compressibility characteristics of the subsurface materials.

Additionally, Fugro will undertake geotechnical analysis and provide engineering recommendations for the construction of the more than 75 retaining walls as part of the project.

Furgo said in a statement: “To expedite data collection, Fugro is using drilling rigs that can acquire both soil and pavement samples from the same machine. This specialised technology increases efficiency and minimises traffic disruption in the work area.”
