It has planned to commence the work on the £126.75m project in the spring of 2021, with the opening scheduled in the summer of 2023.

The project is expected to create more than 50 jobs and training opportunities by Farrans and the wider supply chain.

The Gull Wing across Lake Lothing will connect from Waveney Drive on the south side to Denmark Road and Peto Way on the north side of Lake Lothing.

It will be a lifting bridge that will allow tall vessels to pass through and will also be higher than the existing bascule bridge so that several boats can pass underneath without lifting the bridge.

Farrans said that the new bridge will be the most important infrastructure development in recent times in Suffolk and will also be one of several substantial projects to transform Lowestoft in the coming years.

Farrans Civil Engineering Division operations director Jonny Kerr said: “The Gull Wing bridge will offer in excess of 50 employment and training opportunities for the local area through ourselves and our supply chain to leave a lasting legacy within Suffolk.

“We have worked with Suffolk County Council on 24 projects in the last 20 years, including Lowestoft North Fire Station and Lowestoft South Fire Station.”

Farrans said that the complete business case of the project has now been submitted to the Department for Transport and the review will allow the usage of £73.39m funding provided by the government.

The company has recently developed the West Cumbria Water Supply Pipeline, Edinburgh Trams to Newhaven, M80 Steps to Haggs and Northern Spire Bridge.
