Enel’s renewable energy subsidiary Enel Green Power Panama has begun construction on 26.24MW Esperanza photovoltaic solar plant in Chiriquí.

Located in the town of Progreso in the district of Barú, the solar plant will spread across 40 hectares of land.

It will feature about 64,440 monocrystalline photovoltaic panels, which will generate 41.85GWh of energy per annum.

The plant will cut down the CO2 emissions of more than 23,600 tonnes into the atmosphere. The plant is expected to be completed in the first half of next year.

Once operational, the solar plant will supply energy to key clients in the commercial and industrial sector of the country.

Enel Green Power Central America manager Bruno Riga said: “Photovoltaic energy is the fastest-growing energy in Panama and at Enel Green Power we are proud to contribute, with one new project, to this significant expansion of renewable energy sources.

“In 2015 we were the pioneers in the development of this technology in the country and we continue to grow to offer Panama, as well as our clients, all the benefits that renewable energies represent for the achievement of its sustainability goals.”

Esperanza photovoltaic solar plant forms part of Enel Green Power Panama’s new investments in photovoltaic generation. The company plans to invest $50m in the projects, which will be carried out between 2020 and 2021.

In September this year, Enel Green Power Panama started construction of the 13.12MW Jagüito plant in the province of Coclé.

Covering an area of 13.17 hectares, Jagüito plant will include 32,130 monocrystalline photovoltaic panels. The new plant will generate 21.41GWh of energy per year.

Enel Green Power said that Esperanza and Jaguito solar plants will contribute towards the economy of Panama that was seriously affected by the financial crisis caused by the pandemic.
