Crown Estate Scotland in the UK is seeking proposals from potential bidders for the development of offshore wind farms off the Scottish coast, worth more than £8bn.

As part of the plan, Scotland’s seabed manager has launched the first round of offshore wind leasing programme, named ScotWind Leasing, in the Scottish waters.

The round calls for bidders to build Scotland’s new generation of offshore wind farms and contribute to the Scottish Government’s aim to transition the power to net-zero by 2045.

Scotland Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse said: “The launch of ScotWind – the first offshore wind leasing round to be administered in Scotland – is a very important milestone for Crown Estate Scotland and Scottish Ministers, but also marks another pivotal moment for the development of our offshore wind sector and also presents an opportunity to help develop our strategic economic response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our seas are host to some of the best offshore wind resources in the world, supporting the continuing growth and expansion of the sector.”

The ScotWind leasing programme is aimed to increase the green electricity generation required to power every Scottish household while saving over six million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Crown Estate Scotland Energy & Infrastructure head John Robertson said: “Offshore wind is currently one of the cheapest forms of new electricity generation and Scotland is perfectly poised to host major new projects, with a well-established energy skills sector as well as some of the best natural marine resources in Europe.”

As part of the leasing application, the bidders are also entailed to submit a supply chain development statement for the projects, to include information on the geographical location of supply chain activity.
