Construction has commenced on the new J$2.17bn ($13.87m) Westmoreland Divisional Police Headquarters in Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica.

The initiative is part of Jamaica’s Ministry of National Security’s ‘Project Rebuild, Overhaul, and Construct’ (ROC) scheme.

Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson welcomed the start of construction for the new facility.

He noted that the facility will have the potential to improve service levels for Westmoreland’s citizens and working conditions for officers.

National Security Minister Horace Chang noted that the finished Westmoreland Divisional Headquarters will have all the facilities required for effective policing operations.

Chang said: “One of the challenges facing law enforcement was that our officers were made to work in absolutely deplorable conditions across the country. They were given abandoned buildings, such as old teachers’ cottages, to occupy. In fact, there was no building of police stations.

“So, in discussion with the police commissioner and the police staff, we realised that this was not modern policing. So we set about doing it and today, under ROC, there is a standard requirement for every single repair that we do and every new station that we build.”

The 64,970ft² three-storey facility is designed to house specialised units and coordinate operations across Westmoreland’s 11 police stations.

The headquarters will also integrate security technologies in line with e-policing initiatives.

It aims to improve response times and interactions with the community while boosting police visibility to help maintain public order.

The building will feature a range of amenities, including a sewage treatment plant, standby power plant, fire protection facilities, and infrastructure for internet and telephone connectivity, among others.

It will also have heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems.
