The Organizing Committee of the 31st FISU Summer World University Games Chengdu announced that the construction of the main steel structure for the aquatic centre has been completed recently.

The committee has announced the completion of steel structure construction of the roof with the water-proof sealing.

Claimed to have been completed ahead-of-schedule, the aquatic center is part of the Dong'an Lake Sports Park, which is the venue for World University Games Chengdu 2021.

With a floor area of 200,000m² and a capacity of 40,000 seats, the Dong'an Lake Sports Park includes one stadium and three indoor arenas and is capable of holding opening and closing ceremonies.

The indoor arenas, with 18,000-seat capacity, can host gymnastics events and the 4,500-seat aquatic centre will be venue for swimming events and the small arena can also function as a place for gymnastics training.

Construction of the project began in October, 2018 and is expected to be fully completed by next February.

As the main structure has now been constructed, the installation of electromechanicals, metal roofs, curtain walls and the decorative process of the three stadiums will now start.

The three indoor arenas are three square buildings linked by a large square and they are connected within a circular main stadium through outdoor exhibition areas, sunken squares and hydrophilic platforms.

The multi-functional arena has a built-up area of about 90,000m² and a height of 44.3m, which can be compared with Cadillac Arena in volume.
The arena can also be the venue for 16 indoor sports, apart from holding the World University Games.

It also has 20 large beam-type cantilever whirlwind staircases with a span of 13.5m and a length of about 80m, leading to the roof from the large outdoor platform.
