UK-based infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has won a contract worth £47.5m to design and build a new 400kV substation in Peterhead, Scotland for SSEN Transmission.

The contract represents an important part of SSEN Transmission’s East Coast Reinforcement programme.

The East Coast Reinforcement programme aims to strengthen the network in the area and facilitate the connection of more renewable energy generation to the national grid.

The initial design phase of the project has been completed last month and the construction company will now begin work on the 25,625m2 substation.

Balfour Beatty will also deliver associated cable and overhead line works to ensure a continued safe supply of power to the North East of Scotland.

The company will install a 400kV Gas Insulated Busbars to fulfil its commitment to provide sustainable solutions for its customers.

The Gas Insulated Busbars are used to connect high voltage equipment at electrical substations with AirPlus, an environmentally friendly alternative to sulphur hexafluoride.

Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission and Distribution business managing director Ian Currie said: “Having secured 15 contracts through the Substation Delivery Framework since our appointment in 2013, we have seen our relationship with SSEN go from strength to strength.

“We are delighted to be working with SSEN Transmission once again, utilising our unrivalled expertise and in-depth sector knowledge to successfully deliver this critical substation, which will help to power many homes and businesses across Scotland.”

Works on the project are set to commence later this year and will employ 100 people during its peak construction phase. The project is slated to be completed by 2023.
