Arup/WSP JV wins contract for Link21 programme in US

A joint venture between Arup and WSP has received contract from Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) to provide planning and engineering services for the Link21 programme in the US.

The multi-project initiative is led by the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) and Bart.

It aims to transform the passenger rail network serving the 21-county Northern California Megaregion into a better-connected system.

Under the contract, the JV will be responsible for providing planning and engineering services for Link21’s New Transbay Rail Crossing that will connect Oakland and San Francisco through a new rail service across the San Francisco Bay.

The new transbay passenger rail connection will help to reduce congestion in the existing Transbay corridor and provide a direct connection for regional rail riders.

It will also enable comfortable drive between the Sacramento Area and downtown San Francisco, the Northern San Joaquin Valley, the Peninsula, and the South Bay.

Arup/WSP JV project manager Aidan Hughes said: “From rail engineering and planning to equity analysis and resilience, our broad range of expertise will enable us to deliver this key program that will significantly and positively impact communities across the Northern California Megaregion.”

The project also aims to provide a safe, efficient, equitable, affordable and reliable journey for 12.7 million Northern California Megaregion residents.

Arup/WSP JV Board member and WSP vice president John Fisher said: “We applaud BART and Capitol Corridor’s leadership and vision to advance this needed program to better connect the region in a more sustainable and equitable way.

“We are excited for the opportunity to bring the best of our team, including our small and minority business partners, to help deliver better rail connections for communities across Northern California.”
