Design and engineering consultancy Arcadis has completed Terminal 8 (T8) expansion at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, US.

Five new widebody gates, four new widebody parking positions and a new expanded and upgraded baggage handling system are among the operational improvements at T8.

JFK’s multi-terminal redevelopment programme also includes 130,000ft² of additional and renovated areas.

The $400m expansion and modernisation will enable British Airways to relocate its operations from Terminal 7 and set up along with American Airlines in T8.

Once moved, the six-decade Terminal will be demolished to make space for a new Terminal 6, whose construction is planned to begin early next year.

Arcadis Global Airport Solutions director Nick Hutchison said: “We are so pleased with the results of the Terminal 8 expansion project.

“Airports like JFK, which hosts so many global travellers, will serve as multimodal hubs for urban centres of the future, and Arcadis is proud to have worked on JFK with this vision in mind.”

During the project, Arcadis collaborated with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) Construction Management Division and provided project oversight.

Arcadis vice-president and NY and NJ Mobility Operations director Helga Junold said: “Arcadis is proud to have provided program and construction management expertise across a wide range of disciplines as embedded team members within the PANYNJ Construction Management Division for delivery of the new Terminal 8 at JFK airport.”

Arcadis said that the completion of T8 marks the beginning of the JFK Vision Plan, which aims to transform the airport into a world-class global transportation hub.

It added that work will continue throughout other terminals and portions of the airport in the transformation of JFK International and is estimated to see an investment of more than $18bn.
