Air Products has announced plans to build, own and operate a clean energy complex, with an investment of $4.5bn, in Ascension Parish, Louisiana in the US.

Planned to be operational in 2026, the facility will be equipped to produce more than 750 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of blue hydrogen.

In addition to creating than 2,000 jobs during three years of construction period, the facility is expected to create 170 permanent jobs once completed.

The Ascension Parish facility, which will be one of the world’s largest low-carbon hydrogen projects upon completion, is expected to produce environmentally friendly products including blue hydrogen and co-products such as liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen and liquid argon.

Air Products plans to compress a part of portion of the blue hydrogen from the project and supply to its customers in US Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline network.

The remaining of the blue hydrogen will be used to make blue ammonia, which would be exported.
Air Products plans to capture approximately 95% of the CO2 generated at the facility.

This will be compressed and transported to multiple inland sequestration sites via a pipeline.

For the permanent CO2 sequestration, the firm has already secured permit from the State Mineral and Energy Board, a part of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources.

Air Products chairman, president, and CEO Seifi Ghasemi said: “In addition to our leadership in gray hydrogen, our Canada project and this Louisiana project make us the leader in blue hydrogen.

“The energy transition will occur in stages, and the megaproject we are announcing today in Louisiana will help the State meet its ambitious goals while providing new sources of blue products for customers in the U.S. and around the globe.”
